Tina's Tragedy

The following are excerpts from two upstate New York newspapers:
Efforts Hampered, Firefighters could not save Gainesville home

A monstrous blaze ripped through a Shearing Road home in Gaineseville Tuesday afternoon , and firefighters could do little to stop it.
The house, located some 1,500 feet from the road, was a total loss in the blaze, which occurred shortly after 4 p.m., firefighters say.
The house, the home of the Barber family at 5015 Shearing Road, was located down a narrow driveway that included a small bridge over a creek that no fire truck could safely cross. That delayed fire-fighting efforts by almost a half-hour. Firefighters from area departments busily pumped water out of trucks at the road and sent it down hoses to the house. They also had to deal with bone chilling cold as temperatures dipped into the single digits.
The American Red Cross was housing the Barber family early this week.

Firefighters hampered by location of burning house in Gainesville

Tina Barber could only throw up her hands in frustration Tuesday as she watched her house at 5015 Shearing Rd. burn to the ground.
The house sits well back off Shearing Road, down a path and over a bridge that crosses the East Koy Creek. The problem Tuesday was that the large-sized firetrucks on the scene could not cross the bridge without danger of getting stuck and injuring people and damaging equipment…
Firefighters from seven companies arrived at the scene, but could do little more than offer damage control assistance during the first half hour.
Volunteers, state police and sheriff’s deputies moved a parked van out of harm’s way, removed a propane tank grill from the fire’s edge and rescued a kitten that got too close to the blaze.
….A call went out for the mini-pumper from Perry Center, because it would be the size needed to get across the bridge, officials said.
“Can’t you do anything?” Barber asked the volunteers and police officers standing with her.
…..Instead of waiting helplessly, firefighters were able to bring down tow lines by pickup truck, and began to battle the fire a half hour after it began.
“The house was a total loss,” Reger (county fire coordinator) said…

Our 25th Annual Homecoming was a rousing success with 47 Shilohs entered and numerous others in attendance. Everyone (dogs and their owners) had a great time. For complete coverage, please check out our Homecoming coverage. For another year, there was no winner in our Pick That Shiloh contest.

Many of you have received the March SSDCA Newsletter and no doubt enjoyed the article "Keeping Up with the Joneses". Here's a more recent picture of Baron. This Goldie/King son weighs in at 63 pounds at 5 months. Thanks to him (and his owner's desire to take him everywhere and show him off) several hundred Iowans are learning about Shilohs! Thanks to Lorelle Jones and Pat Urso for sharing this picture to us! |

Viper is the 1st dog I have ever owned. I knew I wanted a Shepherd, but
it was a very big decision for me to find the right one. I visited several breaders and
saw some cute puppies. Then one day I believe it was an ad from a local magazine in
Buffalo that I spotted Tina's Shiloh Shepherds. Alex and I went to visit Tina, and
that was it!! I saw my Viper and fell in love with her. She was the one sticking her face
in the puppy food bowls, stealing liver treats from everyone! She is the most precious
thing to me. I couldn't be blessed with a more perfect dog. She was born 12/12/90...just
recently had a birthday. She is just as playful and silly as the day we brought her home!
Actually...I think she is more silly now! :) No matter how hard I try, I just cant poop
her out!! She just loves to play!! Besides routine check-ups, she has never been sick a
day! Her hips are in great shape too, which was a very big concern for me. As you can
tell...I just love her to death!! She has the greatest personality! Viper is so smart too!
There isn't anything that I cant teach her to do. She lives to please and make us happy.
Sometimes I think we forget she is a dog! Ha! (Actually, Im not sure she realizes it
either!). Every morining she climbs into her chair at the table to eat breakfast with us,
as well as hogs most of the waterbed at night when we go to sleep. If she gets
uncomfortable at night, we sometimes find her sleeping in the living room on the couch
with her head on the pillow! She has her own little pool outside too, and just loves to
sit in it all day long with her toys! I am so happy and thankful that I met Tina and found
Viper. I will be coming back home to Buffalo soon for a visit, and hope to visit Tina and
her newest generation of pups too! I would love to have another Shepherd one day
soon...and wouldn't dream of getting anything other than a Shiloh. Once you have had the
best dog ever...it's hard to want anything else!!

Tina,
.... I know you have had lots of dogs, and that everyone is proud of their pets, but Sammy is truly remarkable. He has never been to the vet for much more than normal check-ups. He has not been neutered and other than one minor male related problem a few years ago he seems to be in absolutely perfect health. His weight varies from about 105 in the hot Texas summer to 110 or more in the cold winter. He slept outside for the first 6 years we had him and he would get close to 120 during the winter.
It's 11:00 PM here in Dallas and I just got finished taking him out for his evening run. The picture I sent was from his afternoon session yesterday at the local ball field. I could tell it was time tonight because he stood in the back yard and barked and then would turn and look to see if he had our attention...this is a ritual...His DEEP deep bass voice could wake the dead and when lets loose you can't ignore him.
He has always had a bit of a loner attitude too. He is always the last one to bed each night. He usually sleeps alone the back room of the house and gets up usually three or four times a night to comes and individually checks to see that each of us is in bed. The first night we got him over 10 years ago he simply walked outside and went to bed....he never cried.
He is crazy about kids...he will let them crawl all over him and has never one time even as much as showed his teeth to a kid.....He is not so accommodating to strange adults. While he had never bitten anyone, he has stared down several. I think it's his way of measuring people. It is also funny that he rarely barks. He cut loose late one night and I went out to see what was up. I ran into a neighbor several doors down. I asked him if he saw anything, he said "NO, but I heard Samson bark, so I knew something was up"
